Thanksgiving With Your Dog: 8 Safety Tips for Chicago Pet Parents

November 5, 2026

Thanksgiving is a wonderful time to gather with family and friends, but all the excitement can be overwhelming for our dogs. Between tempting food, unfamiliar guests, and busy kitchens, a little preparation goes a long way.

Here are eight ways to keep your pup safe and comfortable this holiday.

1. Keep Thanksgiving Foods Out of Reach

Avoid giving your dog turkey bones, fatty foods, gravy, onions, garlic, grapes, raisins, chocolate, or anything containing xylitol. These can be dangerous for dogs.

2. Secure the Trash

Food scraps and packaging can be tempting. Keep trash cans covered and away from curious noses.

3. Watch the Front Door

With guests arriving throughout the day, dogs may slip outside unnoticed. Use a leash, baby gate, or designated room to prevent escapes.

4. Give Your Dog a Quiet Space

Not every dog enjoys a busy gathering. Set up a comfortable area with their bed, water, and favorite toys where they can relax.

5. Set Guest Boundaries

Let guests know not to feed your dog table scraps or approach them while they're eating or resting.

6. Maintain Their Routine

Try to keep regular feeding, potty, exercise, and rest schedules to help your dog feel secure.

7. Be Mindful of Decorations

Keep candles, small decorations, and food-related items out of reach.

8. Practice Basic Commands

Commands like “place,” “stay,” and “leave it” can make holiday gatherings much easier to manage.

A Safer, Happier Thanksgiving

A little preparation can help your dog enjoy the holiday without unnecessary stress. At Back to Basics Dog Training, we help dogs develop the skills and confidence to navigate everyday situations, including busy family gatherings.
